Vitamina D: ateroesclerosis y cardiopatía isquémica

Abstract

La vitamina D es fundamental para el metabolismo óseo y mineral y se han identificado receptores de la vitamina D en el corazón y los vasos sanguíneos, lo que ha suscitado el estudio de posibles efectos cardiovasculares (CV) de esta molécula. En varios estudios epidemiológicos, el déficit de vitamina D se asocia con un mayor riesgo CV. Los resultados de los ensayos clínicos aleatorizados y controlados con placebo no han demostrado que administrar suplementos de vitamina D a la población general produzca una reducción de eventos CV. Sin embargo, estos ensayos clínicos no se centraron en las personas con déficit de vitamina D o en población con cardiopatía previa. En este artículo se revisan los estudios que han asociado el déficit de vitamina D como un marcador de riesgo de enfermedad CV y su relación con los factores de riesgo CV y la fisiopatología de la ateroesclerosis, así como la situación actual de los suplementos de vitamina D en los eventos CV y la mortalidad en la población general.
