Abstract

Uno de los retratos más impresionantes pintados por el Greco a lo largo de su carrera es el del cardenal Juan Pardo de Tavera. Para pintarlo, dado que el cardenal había muerto en 1545 —cuando el pintor tenía unos 4 años—, el Greco recurrió a una mascarilla funeraria que el artista Alonso Berruguete sacó del cadáver de Tavera para tallar el retrato del cardenal para su tumba y también, probablemente, para pintar una efigie del prelado. Con sus obras, Berruguete y el Greco desafiaban los límites entre la realidad y su representación y entre la verdad y la ficción, traspasando los límites de las artes de la escultura y la pintura y subrayando sus diversas capacidades para materializar discursos que aunaban preocupaciones escatológicas y ambiciones puramente artísticas.
