Abstract
The present chapter describes the application of corpus pragmatics to first-and second-language research and is organized as follows: Section 1 offers an introduction to the main issues in corpus pragmatics. Section 2 concentrates on corpus typology and Spanish corpus pragmatics research as an L1. It explores the learner-corpus perspective with some critical insights on L2 pragmatic development and presents an overview of corpus-based research in L2 Spanish pragmatics and the analysis of corpus applications, with a special focus on the teaching and learning of L2 Spanish. Section 3 is devoted to offering methodological applications in research with practical implications for both theoretical and applied linguistics. The chapter ends with suggested research avenues combining linguistics, anthropology, and technology that may unveil how humans learn to communicate in their L1, thus showing that corpus pragmatics is an indispensable tool for Spanish L2 teaching and learning.
