Abstract

In this study, we investigate the phonological properties and the dialectal distribution of lexical creations documented in the context of trading cards, typically used during childhood and preadolescence. Based on responses to an online questionnaire by 394 participants, we identified four different word formation processes, namely syntactic phrases shortening (sile < ‘sí le tengo’), lexical shortening (repe < ‘repetido’), syllabic epenthesis (sipi < ‘sí’) and ending modification (tengui < ‘tengo’). Phonologically, we claim that the trochaic foot plays a crucial role in determining the prosodic shape and the stress patterns of these new creations, given that they tend to be disyllabic and display paroxytone stress. Dialectally, we analyzed the regional distribution of the different forms, paying special attention to forms with «leísmo» (the use of the masculine dative pronoun le instead of accusative lo). The interest in these forms lies on the fact that they extend beyond typically «leísta» areas, suggesting that they diffused already lexicalised.

Impact and social visibility

From the perspective of influence or social adoption, and based on metrics associated with mentions and interactions provided by agencies specializing in calculating the so-called "Alternative or Social Metrics," we can highlight as of 2025-07-16:

  • The use of this contribution in bookmarks, code forks, additions to favorite lists for recurrent reading, as well as general views, indicates that someone is using the publication as a basis for their current work. This may be a notable indicator of future more formal and academic citations. This claim is supported by the result of the "Capture" indicator, which yields a total of: 1 (PlumX).

With a more dissemination-oriented intent and targeting more general audiences, we can observe other more global scores such as:

  • The Total Score from Altmetric: 2.
  • The number of mentions on the social network X (formerly Twitter): 1 (Altmetric).
