Abstract

In the second half of the ninth century, an anonymous monk who lived in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, probably in the region of Navarre-Alava, made use of an empty space in a manuscript preserved in the library of his monastery to copy a funerary poem that has only survived in this version, thus making his humble transcription an unicum of interest. The poem, that fits perfectly into in the Visigothic literary tradition with a distinguishable liturgical influence, must have been composed between the years 653-657 ( terminus post quem given a textual dependence between it and the Carmina of Eugenius II of Toledo) and the mid -ninth century (the date of the copy), possibly during the second half of the seventh century or duri ng the eighth century. Edited by M. C. Diaz y Diaz in 1979, we now offer, after a careful reading of the manuscript and a thorough search of the sources, a new edition of the Versu defuntu (CPL 1538a), along with an introductory study and a translation of the text.
