Resumen

Objectives The objective of this study is to develop classification criteria for overall hand osteoarthritis (OA), interphalangeal OA and thumb base OA based on self-reported data and radiographic features. Methods The classification criteria sets were developed in three phases. In phase 1, we identified criteria that discriminated hand OA from controls. In phase 2, we used a consensus-based decision analysis approach to derive a clinician-based evaluation of the relative importance of the criteria. In phase 3, we refined the scoring system, determined the cut-offs for disease classification and compared the sensitivity and specificity of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) criteria with the 1990 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. Results In persons with hand symptoms and no other disease (including psoriasis) or acute injury that can explain the hand symptoms (mandatory criteria), hand OA can be classified based on age, duration of morning stiffness, number of joints with osteophytes and joint space narrowing, and concordance between symptoms and radiographic findings. Using a sum of scores based on each diagnostic element, overall hand OA can be classified if a person achieves 9 or more points on a 0-15 scale. The cut-off for interphalangeal OA and thumb base OA is 8 points. While the EULAR criteria demonstrated better sensitivity than the ACR criteria in the phase 1 data set, the performance of the two criteria sets was similar in two external cohorts. Conclusions International experts developed the EULAR criteria to classify overall hand OA, interphalangeal OA and thumb base OA in clinical studies using a rigorous methodology.

Impacto bibliométrico. Análisis de la aportación y canal de difusión

El trabajo ha sido publicado en la revista ANNALS OF THE RHEUMATIC DISEASES debido a la progresión y el buen impacto que ha alcanzado en los últimos años, según la agencia WoS (JCR), se ha convertido en una referencia en su campo. En el año de publicación del trabajo, 2024 aún no existen indicios calculados, pero en 2023, se encontraba en la posición 2/58, consiguiendo con ello situarse como revista Q1 (Primer Cuartil), en la categoría Rheumatology. Destacable, igualmente, el hecho de que la Revista está posicionada por encima del Percentil 90.

Impacto y visibilidad social

Desde la dimensión de Influencia o adopción social, y tomando como base las métricas asociadas a las menciones e interacciones proporcionadas por agencias especializadas en el cálculo de las denominadas “Métricas Alternativas o Sociales”, podemos destacar a fecha 2026-04-03:

  • El uso, desde el ámbito académico evidenciado por el indicador de la agencia Altmetric referido como agregaciones realizadas por el gestor bibliográfico personal Mendeley, nos da un total de: 52.
  • La utilización de esta aportación en marcadores, bifurcaciones de código, añadidos a listas de favoritos para una lectura recurrente, así como visualizaciones generales, indica que alguien está usando la publicación como base de su trabajo actual. Esto puede ser un indicador destacado de futuras citas más formales y académicas. Tal afirmación es avalada por el resultado del indicador “Capture” que arroja un total de: 51 (PlumX).

Con una intencionalidad más de divulgación y orientada a audiencias más generales podemos observar otras puntuaciones más globales como:

  • El Score total de Altmetric: 43.
  • El número de menciones en la red social X (antes Twitter): 38 (Altmetric).
  • El número de menciones en medios de comunicación: 2 (Altmetric).

Es fundamental presentar evidencias que respalden la plena alineación con los principios y directrices institucionales en torno a la Ciencia Abierta y la Conservación y Difusión del Patrimonio Intelectual. Un claro ejemplo de ello es:

  • El trabajo se ha enviado a una revista cuya política editorial permite la publicación en abierto Open Access.
  • Asignación de un Handle/URN como identificador dentro del Depósito en el Repositorio Institucional: https://repositorio.uam.es/handle/10486/751881
