Brief description ot the activity

I got my PhD in Art History at the UCM (2007) with “Sobresaliente cum laude” (unanimously), the European Mention and the “Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado.” I was awarded the Pre-Doctoral Grant from the Community of Madrid (2002-06) and four fellowships to research abroad: at the Warburg Institute, London; the BnF, Paris; the British Library, London; and the BNCF, Florence. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Properties (ESCRBBCCM), and I was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Aurelio Blanco Awards of the Government of Madrid for the best academic record in sculpture.

I enjoyed two postdoctoral contracts for researching on the image of “the Other” on medieval and early modern maps: from the MICINN to work at the Groupe d’Anthropologie Historique de l’Occident Médiéval, CNRS, Paris, and at the Warburg Institute, London (2009-11); and from the CSIC to work at the Dept. of History of Science (2011-2014). I was hired by the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE) to work on a project on Beatus manuscripts (2014-15).

I focus my research on medieval and early modern maps, which I approach from an interdisciplinary point of view, merging the History of Art and Cartography, with the History of Science. I have earned an international scope in my line of research as it is proved by the fact that I am a member of the Editorial Board of “Imago Mundi. The International Journal for the History of Cartography”; I have been a member of Scientific Committees of various scientific meetings; and I have presented papers at congresses in Germany, Canada, Denmark, United States, France, Israel, Portugal, United Kingdom and Switzerland.

I have published books such as “La cartografía náutica bajomedieval y el arte de su realización” (Potes: Museo Cartográfico “Juan de la Cosa”, 2015); and “The Beatus Maps...” (Burgos: Siloé, 2014), also published in Spanish, which was finalist in La corónica Book Award 2016. I am also responsible for book chapters in Ashgate and De Gruyter, and articles in peer-review journals indexed at WoS and SCOPUS, such as Word & Image; Imago Mundi; and Archivo Español de Arte.

I was awarded the 2012-13 “David Woodward Memorial Fellowship in the History of Cartography” of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (WI, US), one of the most prestigious international fellowships in my research field, to work on the relationship of art and cartography and curate the exhibition on “Marginalia in cARTography” at the Chazen Museum of Art, Madison (2014). A book with the same title was published by this institution. In 2016 I was invited to curate a major exhibition on maps at the BNE which was titled “Cartografías de lo desconocido. Mapas en la BNE” and in which I worked with Juan Pimentel (2017-18).

I directed the project “101 Masterworks: Science and Art in the Museums and Libraries of Madrid” (www.101obrasmaestras.com/en) funded by the FECYT (2012), and I collaborated frequently in the section “A Ciencia Cierta” of the radio program Marca España of RTVE Radio Exterior.

I am accredited as “Profesor Contratado Doctor,” “Profesor Ayudante Doctor” and “Profesor de Universidad Privada” by the ANECA, and I have teaching experience at different national and international universities, such as the UCM, where I was “Titular Interina” (2008-09). I have also taught on medieval and early modern cartography at the Universidad de Sevilla, CSIC and BNE. I am currently “Profesora Ayudante Doctora” at the UAM
