Republicanismo y liberalismo en la Argentina: Mariano de Vedia y Mitre, lector de Nicolás Maquiavelo (1920-1950)

Abstract

Mariano de Vedia y Mitre, jurista, historiador y profesor en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, emprendió entre los años 1920 y 1950 una iniciativa sin antecedentes en la Argentina: un estudio detenido de la obra de Maquiavelo. Discutió su asociación con la tiranía y la inmoralidad, y lo concibió como un autor republicano que permitía conciliar republicanismo, liberalismo y democracia. El artículo reconstruye esta interpretación y, a través de ella, aborda dos problemas: la crisis de la «Argentina liberal» en los años de «entreguerras» y la relación entre republicanismo y liberalismo en las ideas políticas argentinas.
