Abstract

In this paper, the Iberian religious element of the exempt column is studied through a compared analysis of iconographical and archaeological evidence. This allows us to understand the meaning and function of this element in the Iberian World, pointing out convergences and divergences with the rest of the Mediterranean regions. This data confrontation allows us to notice that there is no architectonical correspondence for the high amount of scenes featuring this column. This lead us to a necessary reflection on this symbol and its realia, on Iberian religion and on its cultural spaces. From this, we can conclude that even the symbol of the exempt column was always in the Iberian religious imaginary, it was not generalized as at architectural element until the monumentalization of sanctuaries, from the 2nd century b.C. onwards.
