Una ciudad abaluartada a través de la mirada del ingeniero militar Antonio Gaver: Ciudad Rodrigo y la defensa de la raya salmantina

Abstract

Ejército y catastro se alinearon a mediados del siglo xviii con la finalidad de avanzar en el conocimiento del territorio y sus gentes. Esta unión se llevó a cabo por la iniciativa de una misma persona, el marqués de la Ensenada, promotor de dos magnas averiguaciones: el catastro de Ensenada y el proyecto de elaboración del mapa de la frontera con Portugal (Flor, 2002). A través de un fuerte espíritu colaborativo surgido entre ambas partes, se pudo saber más de un espacio geoestratégico clave en la construcción del estado moderno: la fron-tera. Sobre este contexto, en las siguientes páginas nos centraremos en estudiar los trabajos realizados por el ingeniero militar Antonio Gaver en la intendencia de Salamanca, con el objetivo principal de conocer, tanto a través de su obra como de la unión con otras fuentes, la visión y la concepción que poseía de una tipología urbana con unas particularidades propias: las ciudades abaluartadas. Para ello, partiremos de un estudio piloto centrado en Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca), por ser una de las plazas militares más destacadas en Castilla.
