Abstract

This paper deals with the early literary characterisation of saints from the local church in Gaul at the 5th century as of the analysis of the first hagiographic literature ever composed about these people: their epitaphs themselves. In this paper we examine this point of view in the particular case of Eutropius, bishop of the Gallo-Roman city of Arausio (currently Orange) at the second half of the 5th century. Eutropius' epitaph was found broken in several pieces at the end of the 19th century and their fragments were quickly separated into different private collections. A new analysis of this inscription has allowed a renewed edition and an also new approach of the early literary portraying of this saint in context.
