Abstract

This article focuses on how youth has been regarded as a powerful determinant of Greek political culture ever since the 1970s. It looks, in particular, at how the role of youth has been either hailed or demonized, either seen as a guiding force (for example the 1973 student movement) or as purely destructive force in Greek society (for example the 2008 riots). The article focuses on the ways in which Syriza’s rise to power in 2015 and its handling of the negotiations with the troika have been regarded as a paradigmatic case of the entirety of Greece acting as European enfants gâtés.
