Abstract

This paper examines the difficulties children have in understanding the process of buying and selling that takes place in a shop, and the development of their comprehension of economic transactions. The notion of profit is analysed, and it is shown that children before the age of 10 do not grasp the idea that the shopkeeper must charge a higher price than the one s/he pays. It is proposed that this is due to two types of difficulties: cognitive and socio-moral. Only from the age of 10 onwards do children start to understand market mechanisms and the role they plays in price regulation
