Abstract

Recent scholarship on science questions the legitimacy of the centre/periphery model, and its ability to account for the dynamics involved in the historical construction of scientific developments. However, this dichotomy is present in science studies, and it is often considered natural to take as scientific only part of what is scientific. Thus, it is assumed that in the scientific there is also a certain hierarchy, a graduation from pure science and the theoretical to applied science and the experimental, more mired in laboratory tasks, subject to interpretation. The problem is accentuated when laboratories move away from theories, when experiments are carried out without their aristocratic guidance. This problem becomes dramatic when it comes to studying a type of knowledge related to the arcane of experimentation, but with its own circuits; we are referring to artisanal knowledge. In the light of this problem, the main purpose of this article is to explore the scope that the notion of artisanal epistemology has in the history of science through a critical review of the most recent publications. Such a review will both reconstruct the reasons that have led to a focus on the work of artisans and orient the readerto where the burgeoning cultural studies in this field seem to be heading. Although this article is the first in a series of texts devoted to maritime culture, the bibliographical review presented here is not limited to this area and offers a broad overview of the flourishing historiography of the history of crafts.

Bibliometric impact. Analysis of the contribution and dissemination channel

The work has been published in the journal Asclepio due to its progression and the good impact it has achieved in recent years, according to the agency Dialnet (Dialnet Métricas). In the year of publication of the work, 2024 there are still no calculated indicators, but in 2023, thus managing to position itself as a Q1 (Primer Cuartil).

Notably, the journal is positioned in the Quartile Q4 for the agency WoS (JCR), in the category History & Philosophy of Science, in the Quartile Q4 for the agency Scopus (SJR), in the category History and Philosophy of Science, classified as A in other national agencies such as CIRC, classified as B by the agency AGUAR.

Impact and social visibility

From the perspective of influence or social adoption, and based on metrics associated with mentions and interactions provided by agencies specializing in calculating the so-called "Alternative or Social Metrics," we can highlight as of 2026-04-02:

  • The use of this contribution in bookmarks, code forks, additions to favorite lists for recurrent reading, as well as general views, indicates that someone is using the publication as a basis for their current work. This may be a notable indicator of future more formal and academic citations. This claim is supported by the result of the "Capture" indicator, which yields a total of: 5 (PlumX).

It is essential to present evidence supporting full alignment with institutional principles and guidelines on Open Science and the Conservation and Dissemination of Intellectual Heritage. A clear example of this is:

  • The work has been submitted to a journal whose editorial policy allows open Open Access publication.
  • Additionally, the work has been submitted to a journal classified as Diamond in relation to this type of editorial policy.

Project objectives

Most relevant results
