Qatar World Cup 2022 and queer discourses: reflections on hegemony and homonationalism in international relations

Abstract

The celebration of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been surrounded by controversies regarding the situation of human rights in the country, especially LGBTI+ rights. From a theoretical perspective that gathers works on international relations theory from materialist, queer and postcolonial perspectives, and through a critical analysis of such discourses and campaigns, it is proven that they reproduced a problematization of the relationship between queerness and Arab-Muslim reality that underpins a hegemonic, liberal vision on sexuality and human rights aligned with the geopolitical interests of the global North; thwarting Qatar's attempt to boost its international influence.
