Abstract

This article confirms that the marble tomb commissioned to the sculptor Gio. Maria Augustallo on the 21st October 1606 in Genoa by Gastón de Moncada, second Marquis of Aitona, through Juan Vivas de Cañamás, ambassador of King Philip III to that city, is the one that partially survives in the Moncada Chapel or Saint Peter Chapel in the cathedral of Lleida. This funerary monument is the tomb of the first Marquesses of Aitona: Francisco de Moncada, Viceroy of València during Philip II’s lifetime, and Lucrecia Gralla Desplà y de Moncada. To corroborate this hypothesis, the drawing of the tomb attached to the contract is published for the first time, while other archival documents are analysed, such as the first Marquis of Aitona’s will. Finally, the article details the Genoese and Valencian artistic context both before and after the date of the contract: the embassy of Vivas de Cañamás and the viceroyalty of Francisco de Moncada.
