Abstract

This work demonstrates the scope of immersive virtual reality implemented for the display of the altarpiece of Saint George of 'Centenar de la Ploma', both in the visible layer of polychrome and the non visible layer, where the original preparatory drawings of the artist appear. This possibility offers substantial improvements in the education and dissemination of our art. It also provides the added value of showing how an exceptional work of art has been created from the beginning. The immersive visualisation of the visible and non visible layers of the altarpiece gives viewers the closest possible experience to that which can be had in a museum but with an important enhancement. Viewers interact with the work, controlling spatial movement over the entire surface of the altarpiece, being able to visualise the iconography of each one of its figures in detail, and from a better perspective than that which ground level provides. This project democratises even more, if possible, the access to culture for everyone, whether or not they can go to a museum. From a technical point of view, this represents a bonus of contextualisation and analysis for the curator and restorer, since the high quality digitalization obtained allows for the analysis and control not only of the technique and processes of the creation, but also of the materiality of the work for its conservation.
