Abstract

Following the Cuban Revolution of 1959, bilateral relations between Cuba and Portugal were adversely impacted by a series of events that transpired until the coup d'& eacute;tat from April 25, 1974. The ideological divide between the two countries, particularly in the context of the Cold War and their respective stance on the decolonization process, led to a climate of mutual suspicion and mistrust. In this regard, Cuban involvement in the African liberation movements of Guinea-Bissau, Angola, and Mozambique proved to be a constant source of concern for the Estado Novo. However, the Carnation Revolution introduced a new phase of engagement and negotiation between the two countries, both within the context of the Portuguese process and in the evolving dynamics of the colonial territories. This article presents a detailed analysis of the main characteristics of the bilateral relations between the two countries, focusing especially on the colonial war and the subsequent political developments in Portugal from April 25, 1974, until November 25, 1975.
