Abstract

The current situation of breastfeeding in Spain is far from meeting the World Health Organization standards of reaching 50 % exclusive breastfeeding rates at 6 months in 2025, generating a wide improvement field. The aim of this research is to know the experience caused by the decision to breastfeed and the determining factors for the maintenance of breastfeeding in the Community of Madrid. This qualitative phenomenological study was carried out between January and May 2023 through semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions to 10 breastfeeding women around three thematic blocks: significance of breastfeeding, factors influencing initiation and factors influencing maintenance. With the approval of the Ethics Committee and guaranteeing confidentiality, the interviews were recorded, transcribed and later analyzed with the Atlas.ti program. The mean age of the participants was 34.4 years, with patterns of exclusive breastfeeding, partial breastfeeding and complementary feeding. The categorization of the quotations into codes has made it possible to interpret the narratives and compare differences to show the need to understand each breastfeeding process in an empathetic and individualized way. Attachment appears as an important meaning. The initiation of breastfeeding seems to be related to self-education and the need for more information. Regarding maintenance, factors such as partner support and the need for health, social and occupational support are influential.
