Effects of exercise in bariatric surgery

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this review is to analyze the current scientific literature about the effects of exercise therapy in obese patients, both before and after a bariatric surgery. Development: A systematic review was carried out in January, 2020 in PubMed, Scopus, Cinhal, Web Of Science and SPORTDiscus, using the words “bariatric surgery”, “exercise therapy” and “therapeutic exercise”. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 studies were finally analyzed. Results showed that exercise therapy improves body composition and benefits in weight loss, increasing the level of muscle mass and insulin in blood. Furthermore, exercise therapy increase aerobic capacity and then it improves physical condition. Conclusion: Exercise therapy is an effective method in obese patients, both before and after bariatric surgery.
